How Search Engine Rankings Work

Search engines choose results based on the query, their understanding of available pages, and many signals. A position can vary with language, location, device, and the search experience. There is no universal list of a dozen factors that guarantees a first-place result.
Separate discovery, indexing, and ranking
A crawler must be able to access a page, the search engine must decide how to index it, and its systems must assess it for a particular query. A successful sitemap submission does not complete all three steps. Check important pages in Search Console and distinguish a technical access problem from a page that simply does not meet the searcher's needs.
Improve what you can verify
Start with useful content, clear titles, understandable structure, relevant links, and a good mobile experience. Add examples and evidence that improve the answer. Avoid fixed keyword-density targets, purchased ranking links, and guarantees. Review pages and queries over time rather than drawing conclusions from a single manual search.
